Boating for a Cure: Miami-Based Boat Builder Aims to Raise $20,000 for Breast Cancer Charity

On Saturday, Oct. 13, an estimated 10,000 people, mostly women, dressed head to toe in pink, will descend upon downtown Miami for the annual Susan G. Komen “More Than Pink Walk.” And while the focus will be raising awareness and money toward finding a cure for breast cancer, participants and spectators will discover a non-traditional addition to the Pink festivities.

Miami-based boat builder Reef Runner Boats is slated to unveil its new Battle Breast Cancer Boat during the More Than Pink Walk, which will be raffled at the Miami International Boat Show in February 2019.

During Saturday’s walk, people can check out the boat and buy raffle tickets for a chance to win. Additionally, anyone can buy raffle tickets online by visiting the company’s Web site reefrunnerboats.com. All raffle ticket proceeds will be donated to the Miami/Fort Lauderdale chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation [SGK].

Reef Runner Boats Owner Donna Milo said this is the second year in a row the company raffled a brand new boat for the Foundation – having successfully fundraised $10,000 in raffle ticket proceeds from the first Battle Breast Cancer Boat during the 2018 Miami International Boat Show.

This year, Milo said the company hopes to raise $20,000, which will then be donated to the local SGK chapter.

While there are several breast cancer charities and foundations from which to choose, Milo said she partnered with the Miami/Fort Lauderdale chapter of SGK because of its work both nationally and locally for breast cancer research, support and awareness.

“They not only raise money for the national organization, but they get involved at the local level for things such as research, transportation and treatment,” said Milo, who has some family and friends impacted by the disease. “I felt more comfortable that a lot of the proceeds that were raised were going directly back into the community.”

SGK Miami/Fort Lauderdale Mission & Programs Manager Blanca Melgar said the Foundation is grateful for the support from Milo and her team at Reef Runner Boats.

“They’re reflecting our whole community, which is Broward, Miami and Monroe counties,” Melgar said. “[The proceeds from the boat raffle] will be used somehow, someway within those three counties.”

Since its founding in 1999, the Miami/Fort Lauderdale chapter of SGK has invested nearly $11 million in local breast cancer awareness projects, such as education programs, funding for patient screening, diagnostics and treatment. The chapter also donates 25 percent of remaining net funds to national breast cancer research programs.

This year, TACO President Jon Kushner arranged for the marine company to donate brand new Rigid Vinyl Rub Rail, end caps, navigation lights and poly tumbler holders for the Battle Breast Cancer Boat.

“It’s all about giving back, doing good and just helping worthy causes,” said Kushner.

Additionally, TACO OEM Sales Manager Mark Henderson helped install the Rub Rail and navigation lights on the Battle Breast Cancer Boat.

“I have a lot of respect for what Reef Runner is supporting,” said Henderson. “It was neat to see someone from the industry who’s giving back and working hard in something they believe in. Anytime I could lend a helping hand on something like that is very important.”

The boat being raffled is a brand new Reef Runner 180 Bay – an 18-foot, wide-beamed boat that Milo said is perfect for flats fishing and family cruising. She added that it has a fuel-efficient hull design, lots of storage and a roomy, fully finished interior liner. The boat also has a 90-horsepower Evinrude outboard motor.

The boat will be raffled on the final day of the Miami International Boat Show, Monday, Feb. 18, 2019 at 1 p.m. Raffle tickets are on sale online and can also be purchased in-person at the More Than Pink Walk.

TACO Marine Showcasing New Products in Booth 1433 at IBEX, Oct. 2 – 4!

Leading up to IBEX, we’re excited to announce that we’ve submitted two new products for Innovation Award consideration!

HIDEAWAY CHILLAX HINGE

In partnership with Malibu Boats, we developed the Hideaway Chillax Hinge– a ratcheting hinge that allows a standard square cushion to ratchet up out of the lounge seat and become a Class-A backrest. Its unique below-the-deck design gives the appearance of no hinge. The curved design of the ratcheting arms allow a standard square cushion up to 7” thick to fit snug in the lounger and still rotate up into a backrest.

The Hideaway Chillax Hinge is easily modified for wider or narrower seatbacks. A long seatback can also be separated into multiple backrests that operate independently. Additionally, other applications can benefit from this hinge design, such as fold-down transom seats, hideaway tables and access doors.

Features & Benefits:

  • Ratchet ups in three locking positions that can be easily adjusted or added to by changing the side plates
  • The clean look of the below-the-deck mounting make it invisible when stowed
  • Low profile, below-the-deck design and only 4-¼” thick
  • Top- or side-mount design with multiple backrest positions
  • Adaptable to any width backrest
  • Manufactured from Stainless Steel Type-316L and electro-polished
  • Designed for thick cushions for extra comfort
  • Allows a backrest to be added anywhere in a lounge or sun pad
  • Effortlessly return the cushion to the lounge position
  • Multiple backrests can be added that operate independently
  • Returned into the lounge position with no sign of a hinge
  • Patent number US8875347

GRAND SLAM 900 ANCHOR LIGHT

Our new Grand Slam 900 Anchor Light was created specifically for the safety and convenience of today’s boater. Climbing on the boat gunnel to raise and lower an anchor light is dangerous, time consuming and frustrating. The GS-900 allows boat operators to lift and descend this navigational requirement from the safety of the deck, right under the top and without ever having to climb on the gunnel again. Simply extend the crank handle and rotate the light to the upright position or back to its stowed, towing location.

The light runs on 12 volts and consists of four 3-watt LED Cree chips driven by two Mean Well drivers. Its smooth operation, attractive machined aluminum frame and cast stainless-steel rotator make this item a must for any boater.

Features & Benefits:

  • Machined / Anodized aluminum body
  • Light brushed finish
  • Polished Type-316L stainless steel crank handle
  • Folding crank handle locks flush into base
  • USCG Approved, 2-nm LED light and shaft included
  • Threaded shaft for consistent lift and descent
  • Delrin bearings for smooth operation
  • Roller bearings in crank assembly
  • Mounts through up to 2″ thick hardtops
  • Includes 4″ x 1/4″ round backing plate (hardware not included)
  • Light tube length allows for modification by installer to exact height
  • No more climbing on T-tops or gunnels
  • Safe, no-hassle raising and lowering of an anchor light

The 31-foot Contender Better Dayz before it was completely remodeled.

Originally, the Contender “Better Dayz” needed new fuel tanks, but after a hurricane damaged other areas of the boat, the crew at Marine Customs Unlimited set to work on a host of other tasks, including painting the hull, remodeling the dash and installing brand new black TACO Rub Rail with a Stainless-Steel Insert.

Better Dayz also had a new Armstrong Nautical Products bracket mounted on the transom, new twin Yamaha 300s mounted on the bracket, a new Armstrong ladder, a completely rebuffed deck with new nonskid, custom diamond-stitched upholstery and new Pacer Group wiring.

Episode 11 also takes viewers onboard a completely remodeled 28-foot classic 1969  Cary Sportsman boat.

This is what the 28-foot 1969 Cary Sportsman boat looked like before Tim McKernan began the remodeling project.

Five years ago, Miami resident Tim McKernan wanted a project boat he could remodel for some family outings and fishing excursions. What was intended as a summer-long hobby morphed into a five-year adventure that resulted in the McKernan’s having a one-of-a-kind boating and fishing  masterpiece.

One of the new features to the Cary Sportsman is the center console and T-Top, which also has TACO Grand Slam Outriggers.
The completely remodeled 28-foot 1969 Cary Sportsman is a truly unique boat.

While keeping some of the boat’s original charm, such as the cabin, McKernan completely revamped the Cary Sportsman all the way from the stringers to the new Armstrong bracket and outboard engines. He also outfitted the once-dual consoled boat with a center console and T-top, complete with TACO Grand Slam Outrigger systems.

Learn to Kite Fish Like a Pro!

We’ve got a new FISH TACO TV video about kite fishing!

Off the coast of Morehead City, N.C., Captain Mark Henderson from the Liquid Fire Fishing Team demonstrates some important tips for kite fishing.

Captain Mark Henderson from the Liquid Fire Fishing Team demonstrates some great tips for how to kite fish using our TACO Marine Trident Rod Holder.

Featuring our Straight and Offset Trident Rod Holders with a Tool Caddy, Henderson discusses techniques for deploying a kite, what types of rods and reels to use, how to prepare a basic rigging kit, the benefits of kite fishing and how to effectively use our Trident Rod Holders with a Tool Caddy.

Henderson uses our TACO Marine Deluxe Trident Rod Holder Offset with Tool Caddy for kite fishing.
Our Trident Rod Holder has a removable Tool Caddy, which is great for storing lures, pliers, knives, scissors and other essential equipment for kite fishing.

Our high-polished aluminum Trident Rod Holders have a detachable tackle tray Tool Caddy designed to conveniently and safely hold fishing gear, including hooks, pliers, knives, rigs, lures, spoons and a beverage.

Henderson uses a large, orange cork when kite fishing because it’s easy to see when adjusting lines.
Using live bait, Henderson attaches the kite line through the bait’s dorsal fin – ensuring it stays in place while also being able to swim naturally in the water.
Henderson recommends using a short electric reel when kite fishing.
One of the many fish caught while kite fishing was a King Mackerel by Henderson’s son Joshua.
